Looking for a little adventure? Cleveland County offers a wide variety of attractions, activities, and parks. Enjoy year round golfing, boating and water sports at John Moss Lake, hiking and camping at area parks or exploring our local wineries.
 Cleveland County’s excellent weather
and climate create the perfect region to enjoy a round of
golf. Eight courses are located within the county and most
of them are open to the public. The private golf courses in
Cleveland County near Shelby and
Kings Mountain offer paid
memberships to qualified golfers. If temperatures in
Shelby become too sweltering in
the summer months, beat the heat at the John H. Moss lake; a
gorgeous lake with over 57 miles of shoreline.
Outdoor lovers enjoy spending the day at the Shelby City
Park, which is a gigantic mega-complex for all things
outdoors and athletic. Inside the Shelby City Park visitors
will find a nine hole golf course, an Olympic sized pool,
child friendly playground space, and a magnificent restored 1919 Herchell-Spillman
carrousel that delights children of all ages. The carrousel
is housed in the Anne Dover Bailey Pavilion just near the
Shelby Rotary Train, a special, restored train with a newly
constructed train depot to protect the boarding riders. Both
the carrousel and the train are open to the public. Because
the park is home to the carrousel, each year it hosts the
Foothills Merry Go Round Festival in the spring and brings
carrousel lovers from all over the country to our region.
Another fun place to visit for outdoor recreation in the
county is the Broad River Greenway. The Broad River Greenway
runs along the Broad River near Boiling Springs and is a
great place to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, horseback
riding or just a leisurely stroll. Visitors to the Greenway
also like to stop and take pictures of the The Phifer Cabin.
 Looking for fun for the kids? Children and families enjoy the YMCA in Boiling Springs which offers a new Aquatics Center. There are three YMCA’s in Cleveland County offering exercise, team sports, aquatics, golf, childcare and more. You can also enjoy hiking, rock climbing and camping at one of our state parks.
In addition to all of the attractions,
Cleveland County hosts
several special events in its many communities throughout
the year. One in particular, the Kings Mountain Over the
Mountain Triathlon, is held in May and is a special
community event that links recreation, tourism, and
charitable causes. Even if you are not running in the
marathon, it’s a wonderful event to attend. Another famous
event is the Cleveland County Fair, the largest county fair
in North Carolina with more than 100,000 people
attending each year. Featuring amusement rides, games, livestock, crafts and wonderful foods, this annual 10 day event always takes place in the fall of each year.
